Freestyle Start Stop Problem
Summary of the thread
The 2005 Ford Freestyle's start-stop system isn't functioning, with the engine shutting off unexpectedly and a warning light appearing. The issue is likely due to a heavily discharged or defective battery, as modern cars are sensitive to voltage fluctuations, and the start-stop system is disabled if the battery isn't performing optimally. Testing and potentially replacing the battery is recommended, as it could resolve the problem and prevent further issues with the car's electronics.

Thanks for the quick reply! No, I haven't had the battery tested specifically, but the car starts fine most of the time. Could it really be the battery even if it starts?

Absolutely. Modern cars are incredibly sensitive to voltage fluctuations. The start-stop system, in particular, is one of the first things to be disabled if the battery isn't performing optimally. The car's computer, or ECU, monitors the battery's state of charge constantly. If it detects a drop below a certain threshold, it will disable the start-stop function to protect the starter motor, which is used more frequently with this system. Plus, that automatic restart function puts a huge strain on the battery. The error code you're seeing is a strong indicator that the battery is the prime suspect. While it might still start the car, the battery's internal resistance could be too high, preventing it from delivering the necessary current for the start-stop system to function correctly. I recommend getting the battery professionally tested. If it's the battery, replacement is relatively straightforward. If not, then you'll need professional help to check the starter motor.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on – it was a heavily discharged battery. Replacement and error reset cost me 290€. Appreciate the help!

Interesting issue! I had something similar happen with my 2012 Opel Insignia. The start-stop system, often marketed as "Eco Mode", relies heavily on battery health. If the battery's voltage drops too low, the system will disable itself to conserve power and prevent you from being stranded. This could be due to a heavily discharged or defective battery. The engine stalling and the warning light might also be related to this, as the car's electronics are becoming unstable. Have you had the battery tested recently? The car might think the battery is depleted even if it still starts the car sometimes.
