Thanks for the quick reply! I took a look at the switch itself. It seems to be connected properly, and I didn't notice any obvious damage. However, I am not really comfortable with electrical components and how they should function. Should I just replace the switch? Is there a way to test the switch to be 100% sure?

Given you're not super comfortable with electrical testing, and that the symptoms point so clearly to the switch, and you already looked over its physical condition, replacing the switch would be the most direct route, as long as you install it correctly. If that doesn't solve it then visit a workshop.

I replaced the brake light switch myself. Took all of 15 minutes, the error message is gone and the brake lights are working again! That also means I didn't need to visit a workshop and pay them. Thanks for the advice; it was a huge help!

Sounds like the brake light switch is the prime suspect. A faulty switch can definitely cause those symptoms, especially the error message. It's a common issue. Have you tried visually inspecting the switch? Sometimes you can see if it's physically damaged or disconnected.
