Frontier Diesel EGR Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
The 2004 Nissan Frontier diesel is experiencing rough running, reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and a hissing sound, with the check engine light on. These symptoms suggest a failing EGR valve, possibly due to a vacuum leak or carbon buildup. It's recommended to check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTC), particularly in the P0400 series, and consider a visual inspection for carbon buildup. Seeking professional diagnostics and potential replacement at a workshop is advised to confirm and address the issue.

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't physically inspected the EGR valve yet. Regarding the DTC, I don't have my own scanner currently, but I can borrow one to check. Is there any specific reading you would recommend to clarify and diagnose the EGR valve, or should I go to a workshop?

Given the mileage and symptoms, it's likely the EGR valve is the culprit. While checking the DTC is helpful, and a P0400 series code would strongly suggest an EGR issue, a visual inspection for carbon buildup is also advisable. I would suggest seeking a diagnostic from a reputable workshop, as they can perform more in-depth testing like flow testing to confirm the valve's functionality.

Appreciate the advice. I'll get the DTC read, but it does sound like I am facing a failing EGR valve. I've booked it in at the workshop - they've quoted 355€ for replacement. Thanks again for confirming my suspicions!

The symptoms you describe are indeed common indicators of a failing EGR valve. The hissing sound could be due to a vacuum leak within the EGR system, or possibly excessive exhaust gas escaping around the valve. Have you checked the EGR valve itself for excessive carbon buildup or physical damage? What diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is the check engine light throwing?
