Frontier Gear Selection Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Nissan Frontier with a diesel engine is experiencing gear selection failure, where the gear indicator on the instrument panel is non-functional, leading to gear engagement issues. The automatic transmission shows erratic shifting, slippage, grinding noises, and logs an error. The problem is suspected to be caused by a defective control unit, which requires diagnosis and potentially costly replacement and coding at a workshop.

Indeed, the gearbox slips noticeably, accompanied by pronounced grinding noises during shifts. Did you experience similar symptoms? Did you also have the gear selection display failure in the speedometer?

Yep, sounds like the same problem. Get it to a workshop to be diagnosed. It may require replacement and coding. Will cost you a pretty penny, I'm afraid.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I will arrange for a workshop visit promptly. It does seem like a defective control unit, a costly repair indeed. The workshop confirmed the issue, and estimated around 1000€ for the replacement and coding.

I had something similar on my Frontier. Was the gearbox slipping a lot? Made an awful noise when it changed?
