Frontier Serpentine Belt Tensioner Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Nissan Frontier with a diesel engine is experiencing issues with the serpentine belt tensioner, suspected to be defective due to excessive play and lack of damping action. The problem is likely causing the belt handover to malfunction. A similar issue was resolved by replacing the tensioner, which eliminated a persistent belt squeal. It is recommended to have the tensioner checked and potentially replaced to resolve the issue.

Engine performance seems normal otherwise, thankfully. And yes, I checked the tensioner pulley. There's excessive play, and the damping action is completely gone. By "something similar," do you mean the tensioner itself failed, or was it something else in the system?

Nah, the tensioner was definitely the culprit in my case. Had it replaced and the squeal vanished instantly. Honestly, with that mileage and the symptoms you're describing, I'd bet good money it's the tensioner. I went straight to the workshop and they confirmed it. Save yourself some more headache and have it checked.

Appreciate the input. Looks like a trip to the shop is in order. Spoke with them today and a new tensioner, installed, is looking like 455€. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

Frontier, eh? Yeah, I had something similar happen on mine. Serpentine belt squeal that just wouldn't quit. How's your engine performance otherwise? Did you check the tensioner pulley for play?
