Fuel consumption and power loss in a 2002 Renault VelSatis: Experiences and tips wanted

Poor fuel economy

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Hi guys, I've just got a problem with my 2002 Renault VelSatis petrol engine with 87,322 km on the clock. Power is down somehow and it stinks from the exhaust, plus the check engine light is on and it's drinking like a hole. I've already had an incident with a defective air valve. Have any of you been through something like this? What experiences have you had with your mechanic? I was really disappointed with the last workshop visit. Can you give me a tip? Thanks in advance.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2005 Renault Laguna gasoline engine. Same symptoms - power down and the car stank badly from the exhaust. The check engine light was also on and the thing was guzzling gas like a maniac. After my last visit to the garage, they discovered that I had a faulty cable/connector secondary air valve/secondary air pump. Among other things, this fault causes the car to not get the right amount of extra air it needs to burn gasoline properly. If the amount is not correct, this can seriously damage your engine in the worst case. So you definitely need to get it checked at the garage before it gets worse. I would advise you to go to your garage quickly. The solution in my case was to replace the secondary air valve/secondary air pump and reconnect everything so that it worked properly. After that, the car ran like clockwork again. So, better act fast and get it checked! Good luck, hope this helps you.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. Sounds like you really hit the bull's eye. Do you happen to remember the cost of the whole thing? And did something similar happen to you afterwards or has your car been running smoothly since then? It would be cool if you could give me some more input. Thank you!

Hey, no stress, always happy! Yeah, that really was a stroke of luck. Since you're asking about it, I remember it cost me €95 to fix that stupid cable/connector fault on the secondary air valve/secondary air pump. I was pretty relieved when it was done. Since then, everything has been tip-top on my cart, no new stuff has appeared and the air valve has been running perfectly since the visit to the mechanic. Keep your fingers crossed that it goes the same way with your Renault. Good luck!

Great, thank you very much for the information! I'm reassured about the costs and it's good to know that everything will run smoothly afterwards. I'll follow your advice and go to the workshop tomorrow. Hopefully everything will go smoothly for me too. Thanks again for your help, buddy!
