Fullback ABS Fault Lateral Acceleration Sensor

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2017 Fiat Fullback diesel. The ABS lamp lights up intermittently, leading to a complete failure of the ABS system. I've scanned the error memory and it's showing a fault with the lateral acceleration sensor. Given the symptoms and error code, the control unit itself seems like the likely culprit. Has anyone experienced something similar? I'm trying to gauge the repair cost, which I'm estimating around 1000€ based on parts and labor. Mileage is 196563 km. Any insights regarding electronic stability, traction control, steering angle, or yaw rate sensors would be greatly appreciated.

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Fiat Fullback diesel is experiencing intermittent ABS failure, indicated by an ABS lamp and a fault code related to the lateral acceleration sensor. The issue may stem from a faulty control unit, as suggested by the error code and symptoms like vague steering and random traction control activation. A similar case was resolved by replacing the sensor/control unit, which is the recommended solution. The vehicle is scheduled for repair, with expectations that a new sensor/control unit will resolve the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Whoa, ABS issues are scary! I had something similar happen with my Fullback, though I didn't diagnose it myself. When the ABS went haywire, did you notice anything weird with the steering or handling before the light came on? Like, any unusual pulling to one side or a feeling that the electronic stability control was kicking in for no reason?

Good question. I haven't explicitly noticed anything immediately before the light comes on, but thinking about it, the steering does feel a little vague at times, almost like there's excessive play. And yes, now that you mention it, I have felt the traction control intervene occasionally on perfectly dry roads. Is that what you experienced as well?

Yep, that sounds exactly like what I went through. Vague steering and random traction control activation were the clues. Turned out to be a faulty lateral acceleration sensor. I’m no mechanic, so I took it straight to a workshop. They replaced the sensor/control unit, and it fixed the problem completely. Based on what you're describing, and the error code you pulled, I'd say it's highly likely you're facing the same issue. Better book it in somewhere!

Thanks for confirming, that’s really helpful. It's good to know someone else has experienced the same symptoms. I've booked it into a reputable shop, and they've quoted me a similar price to what I estimated. Hopefully, a new sensor/control unit will sort it out. Appreciate the input!
