Fusion Fuel Filter Heater Error

I'm having an issue with my 2002 Ford Fusion diesel. It's showing an error in the memory related to the fuel filter heater. I've noticed reduced engine power, poor engine response, higher fuel consumption, and uneven idling, especially when cold. The car has 216171 km on the clock. I suspect an electrical issue with the filter heater, possibly a faulty cable or plug connection. Anyone experienced something similar?

Sounds like you've done some good initial diagnostics. The fuel filter heater circuit is a common point of failure. Have you checked the voltage at the heater connector with the engine running? Also, inspect the connector itself for corrosion or damaged pins. Sometimes, a bad ground can also mimic these symptoms. Filter replacement is a reasonable first step if the element is old anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't checked the voltage directly at the connector yet, but that's a good call. Where is the ground located for the heater circuit? I want to check this before considering a filter replacement right away.

The ground is usually located near the fuel filter housing, often bolted to the chassis. However, without a wiring diagram specific to the 2002 Fusion diesel, I can't pinpoint the exact location. Given the symptoms and the error code, a defective cable or plug connection of the component is very likely. If you're not comfortable tracing the wiring yourself, it might be best to take it to a workshop with experience in diesel fuel systems. They can diagnose it quickly and accurately.

OK, appreciate the advice. I'll trace the ground first, but it seems I'll be heading to a workshop. The diagnosis ultimately pointed to exactly what you suggested: a corroded connector. Repair cost was 95€ including parts and labor.
