G Klasse reduced power and battery light
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Mercedes G Klasse exhibited reduced engine power and a battery warning light, indicating potential alternator issues. The error memory pointed to a faulty generator, suggesting the alternator might not be charging the battery properly. It was advised to check the serpentine belt and use a multimeter to test the alternator's output. Ultimately, a workshop confirmed the alternator was defective, and replacing it resolved the problem.

Thanks. I haven't checked the serpentine belt yet, I'll take a look. How can I determine if the alternator is actually defective? Is a multimeter sufficient?

Yes, a multimeter can be used to check the alternator's output voltage while the engine is running. However, for a definitive diagnosis, it is recommended to visit a workshop. They can perform a load test to assess its performance under stress. Defective generator is a probable cause.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were right. The generator was defective. Alternator replacement cost me 960€. Runs fine now.

I had similar symptoms in my G Klasse. Check the serpentine belt for wear or slippage. A faulty belt can cause the alternator not to charge properly, leading to a battery low situation and eventually affecting the starter motor. Has the alternator been tested?
