So, when you say 'thorough diagnostic assessment', what exactly are you suggesting? Are there specific things I should tell the mechanic to look for beyond just pulling the diagnostic trouble codes? I want to be armed with as much info as possible before they start tearing things apart.

I can confirm that ABS faults can lead to transfer case problems. I recommend asking the workshop to specifically investigate the communication between the ABS module, the engine control unit (ECU), and the transfer case control module. Also request a check of the wheel speed sensors and their wiring, as these are critical for ABS operation and can trigger the issues you are experiencing. A scan for any stored or pending diagnostic trouble codes related to these systems is essential. Ultimately, professional diagnosis with appropriate tools is unavoidable.

You were spot on! I took it to the shop, and it was a faulty ABS sensor throwing everything off. They replaced the sensor, cleared the codes, and the transfer case is back to normal. Traction control light is gone too. Absolutely zero cost! Thanks again for the insight!

I am familiar with the G Klasse and have encountered similar issues. A malfunctioning ABS system can indeed cause consequential faults that affect the transfer case operation. This is due to the integrated nature of the traction control and stability systems, which rely on ABS data for proper function. The gear selector might also be implicated if the system is detecting inconsistencies. It's necessary to perform a thorough diagnostic assessment to identify the root cause.
