Galaxy diesel power loss and smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Ford Galaxy diesel is experiencing power loss and smoke from the exhaust, potentially due to a defective Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The engine light is on, indicating a possible issue with the DPF or a sensor affecting fuel efficiency and causing backpressure. Without diagnostic tools, identifying the exact problem is challenging, and professional diagnosis is recommended to prevent further damage. The garage confirmed the DPF was defective, leading to a costly repair.

The engine light is on. I haven't tried any DPF cleaning solutions yet. Is there a specific sensor I should check? I want to be sure before I consider DPF cleaning. Can I diagnose a sensor fault without special tools?

Okay, engine light plus those symptoms pretty much confirms it. Without proper diagnostic tools, pinpointing the exact sensor is tricky. It's probably best to take it to a workshop for proper diagnosis. Continuing to drive it could cause further damage.

I took it to a garage, and they said the DPF was defective. The repair, including replacement, cost 1550€.

Sounds like DPF alright. Is the engine light on? Could also be a sensor fault messing with fuel efficiency and causing excessive backpressure. Have you tried any DPF cleaning solutions?
