Galloper check engine light and fuel consumption
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Hyundai Galloper with a gasoline engine is experiencing a persistent check engine light and increased fuel consumption. The suspected cause is related to the inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly involving a defect in the camshaft solenoid valves or issues with the power supply to them. Suggested solutions include checking for oil sludge around the valve cover and oil pan, considering the timing chain's condition, and testing the solenoid valves. Ultimately, a faulty camshaft solenoid valve and the need for an oil change were identified as the issues, leading to a resolution at a workshop.

Thanks for the quick reply! No, the engine isn't running rough, and I haven't noticed any significant loss of power. The timing chain is original as far as I know, never been replaced. Where exactly should I be looking for this "oil sludge"? And is there a way to test the camshaft solenoid valves?

Oil sludge usually builds up around the valve cover and in the oil pan. If the timing chain is original after all these years and kilometers, that could also contribute to the problem, if it got stretched out. Honestly, without proper diagnostic tools, testing the solenoid valves will be a pain. I'd recommend taking it to a trusted workshop that knows what they're doing with the BMW VANOS – those are quite similar.

Appreciate the advice! I'll take it to a workshop. Turns out one of the camshaft solenoid valves was faulty and the car also needed an oil change. The final bill was 250€. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

Sounds like a headache! Could be a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves, or maybe the power supply to them is wonky. Is the engine running rough, or have you noticed any low power, especially at lower RPMs? It might also be worth checking for oil sludge, as that can mess with the VANOS system. Has the timing chain ever been replaced?
