Gearbox fault on BMW 5 Series Diesel (BJ2007)

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Whining or grinding noises

Dear community, I have a BMW 5 Series diesel from '07 that is currently acting up. The gears are jumping back and forth wildly, plus there's this grinding noise when changing gear and a general howling or screeching noise. I'm secretly afraid that the torque converter lock-up clutch isn't working properly. Have any of you ever experienced anything like this? I would like to know how you had the problem fixed in the workshop and what your experiences were. Many thanks in advance!

Hi buddy, I had a similar problem with my '05 BMW 3 series diesel. I have little experience with cars, but when I noticed these symptoms, I took the car to my garage. They diagnosed it as a faulty automatic transmission converter. So, I decided to get it fixed because I had no other choice. The repair cost me a whopping 2120 euros, which was quite surprising, but afterwards the car ran smoothly again. It sounds like you have a similar problem, but could you tell me how many kilometers are registered on your car and when your last service was? Maybe then I can help you more.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply and help! My 5 series diesel now has pretty much 187423 km on the clock and the last service was not too long ago. Now I'm kind of scared of the repair costs when I think of yours. Are you sure there is no way to reduce the costs? So, any cheap alternative or something? Thanks again in advance!

Hey, I can totally understand your worries! Honestly, I was also shocked at how expensive the repair was. While you could try to find a used replacement part or maybe even get your hands dirty yourself if you know anything about auto repair, it all comes with risk. The torque converter is a complicated part and the cost of a faulty repair can be even higher. Maybe you can get several workshop opinions to make sure the price is fair. My tip: Ask the workshop about the warranty - if the part fails again within the first few years, you could possibly save money. Good luck with that!

Thanks for your honest words, buddy. Maybe the scare won't be so bad after all. I'll definitely take the matter up with the garage and have it assessed and maybe even get different opinions. The warranty thing sounds like a good plan too. Hopefully everything will hold up well. And if not, I'll have to bite the bullet and spend the money on the repair. I guess I have no choice but to keep cool and hope for the best. Thanks again for your support and advice. Let's talk again soon when it's all done!
