Genesis Air Valve Malfunction

I'm experiencing a weird issue with my 2013 Hyundai Genesis (gasoline engine). The check engine light keeps popping up. I've scanned the codes and it points towards an air valve malfunction. I did the usual checks – visually inspected the vacuum hoses around the intake manifold and throttle body, but nothing obvious jumps out. I'm leaning towards a defective hose connection somewhere between the pump and the valve. Has anyone dealt with similar manifold pressure issues on these engines?

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2013 Hyundai Genesis experiencing a check engine light due to an air valve malfunction. Initial checks by the owner didn't reveal any obvious issues, leading to a suspicion of a defective hose connection. A suggestion to use soapy water to detect leaks was made, but ultimately, a smoke test at a workshop identified a hairline crack in a small vacuum hose as the cause. Replacing the hose resolved the issue, clearing the error code and restoring the car's performance.

Interesting. On my old Saab 9-3 (turbocharged, of course!), I had very similar symptoms – check engine light, pointing towards air intake issues. Turned out to be a cracked vacuum hose that was very hard to spot. Have you tried applying a bit of soapy water to those hoses with the engine running? Sometimes that’ll reveal a sneaky leak.

That's a good shout, thanks! I hadn't thought about soapy water. Which hoses were causing you grief on the Saab? Was it one of the smaller diameter vacuum lines, or something more substantial carrying higher pressure?

It was one of the smaller ones snaking around near the throttle body. Honestly, it probably deteriorated from age and the heat cycles. Given you've already checked the main hoses, I reckon it's worth getting a smoke test done at a workshop. Might save you a lot of time chasing ghosts!

Took it to the shop, and you were spot on! It was a hairline crack in one of the smaller vacuum hoses – exactly where you suggested. Smoke test pinpointed it instantly. New hose fitted, code cleared, and car's running sweet again. Cost me 175€ all in. Thanks heaps for the advice!
