Getz PCV Valve Issue

My 2003 Hyundai Getz with a gasoline engine is throwing me for a loop. Check engine light is on, power is noticeably down, and I'm seeing some smoke when I really put my foot down. I'm suspecting the crankcase ventilation valve, PCV for short, might be the culprit. Anyone else wrestled with this gremlin? I've checked for obvious leaks, cleaned the throttle body, but nothing. Compression seems okay. Could a faulty PCV really cause all these symptoms? The car has 142941 km on the clock. I'm not sure where to go next!

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2003 Hyundai Getz experiencing a check engine light, reduced power, and bluish smoke during acceleration. The suspected issue is a faulty PCV valve, which can cause oil burning and pressure imbalances in the crankcase. The suggested solution is to replace the PCV valve, as a stuck valve can lead to these symptoms. After replacing the valve, the issues were resolved, confirming the PCV valve as the culprit.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my Getz, although I can't recall the year. That smoke on acceleration is a big clue. Is it like a bluish smoke? 'Cause if so, you're definitely burning oil, and a dodgy PCV valve can absolutely cause that. It messes with the crankcase pressure, which then forces oil past your piston rings. Did you check the PCV valve itself? Give it a shake - should rattle freely. If it's stuck open or closed, bingo!

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, the smoke is kinda bluish. I did try shaking the PCV valve, and it does rattle a bit, but it doesn't feel super free, if that makes sense? It's like there's some resistance. Is there any way to properly test it without just replacing it? Also, how bad was the oil consumption when you had the problem? I'm trying to gauge how urgent this is.

Okay, if it's not rattling freely, that's a red flag right there. While there are some fancy ways to test it with vacuum gauges, honestly, for the price of a new PCV valve, I'd just swap it out. Mine was doing the same thing, rattling a bit but clearly not functioning properly. The oil consumption wasn't insane, but I was definitely topping it up more often than usual. Honestly, I'd just bite the bullet and get it replaced. It's a pain, but cheaper than a new engine! If that doesn't fix it, THEN you start looking at more serious issues. My advice is, go to a workshop and get it done properly.

Thanks a million for the advice! I took it to a local workshop, and you nailed it – the PCV valve was indeed the problem. The mechanic confirmed it was sticking and causing all sorts of havoc. Replaced it, and the check engine light is gone, the smoke is gone, and the power is back! Cost me about 360€ all in. Should've listened earlier, would have saved me a headache. Cheers!
