Getz rough running exhaust smell

I'm having trouble with my 2002 Hyundai Getz, gasoline engine. The check engine light is on, the engine is running rough, there's an acrid exhaust odor, and it looks like there's an exhaust leak. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Hyundai Getz was experiencing rough running, an acrid exhaust odor, and an exhaust leak, with the check engine light on. The symptoms suggested a fuel/air mixture problem, likely due to a faulty oxygen sensor, which can cause the engine to run too rich. After replacing the defective lambda sensor, the car's performance improved significantly.

Sounds like your Getz is having a bad day! Check engine light plus rough running and exhaust smells... that's usually not good. Could be a few things. Has the car been sitting for a while? Old gas can cause rough running, but the exhaust smell and light make me think it might be something more serious. If it smells rotten eggy, it could be your catalytic converter. Has your fuel consumption increased noticeably?

The car is used regularly, so I doubt it's old gasoline. The smell is more like unburnt fuel. And yes, fuel consumption has definitely gotten worse. Could a defective oxygen sensor cause these symptoms, or is it something like the EGR valve malfunctioning?

Unburnt fuel smell and worse fuel consumption seriously points towards a fuel/air mixture problem. Think of it like a cake recipe gone wrong – too much flour or not enough baking powder! A faulty lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) would explain that, as it's what tells the car's computer how much fuel to inject. If it's giving dodgy readings, the engine could be running way too rich. While EGR issues could cause issues, the O2 sensor seems the most likely culprit given the symptoms. Though, honestly, with all those symptoms, I'd get it checked out by a professional ASAP.

Your insights regarding the oxygen sensor proved correct. My mechanic diagnosed a defective lambda sensor. The replacement, including labor, cost 375€. The Getz runs perfectly now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
