If the air filter looks okay, is there anything else I can check on the MAF sensor itself before replacing it? Is there a way to test it?

Honestly, without the right tools, testing the MAF is tricky. You'd need a multimeter and know what readings to expect. Given the symptoms – higher fuel consumption, engine stalling, smoke – and the mileage, it's highly likely the MAF sensor. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. They can confirm with diagnostics. I spent around 365€ for the repair.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a workshop and they confirmed it was the MAF sensor. Replaced it, and everything's running smoothly now. Fuel consumption is back to normal, no more stalling, and the check engine light is off. Appreciate the help!

Sounds like the MAF sensor is acting up. I had similar issues with my GLA. Check the air filter first. A dirty air filter can mess with the air-fuel ratio, causing the MAF to give bad readings, leading to engine stalling and the check engine light. But with that mileage, it's probably the sensor itself. They do fail.
