GLA power steering issue resolved

GLA power steering malfunction on my 2023 Mercedes GLA hybrid I am at my wit's end The steering wheel vibrates and shakes violently handling feels completely spongy and the error memory has flagged a fault Steering requires significantly increased effort it feels like the power steering is failing completely I suspect a defective cable or plug connection Has anyone experienced something similar Is there a particular harness location I should inspect first

Summary of the thread

A 2023 Mercedes GLA hybrid experienced a power steering malfunction, with symptoms including violent steering wheel vibrations, spongy handling, and increased steering effort. The suspected cause was a defective cable or plug connection. After considering potential issues like low hydraulic fluid and wheel alignment, the problem was identified as a corroded connector on the power steering control module. Cleaning the connector and applying dielectric grease resolved the issue.

I had a similar issue on my old Opel Astra a few years back although the symptoms weren't quite as severe 'Spongy handling' indicates a possible issue within the power steering system itself Have you checked your hydraulic fluid level Low fluid can definitely cause the pump to struggle and create those symptoms Also have you had your wheel alignment checked recently That could contribute to the vibration you are experiencing Wheel alignment refers to adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the manufacturer's specifications Incorrect alignment can lead to uneven tire wear pulling to one side and steering wheel vibration

Thanks for the insights Regarding the hydraulic fluid where exactly is the reservoir located on the GLA I want to make absolutely sure I'm checking the correct one Also how would wheel alignment issues affect the stored error code

On my Astra the reservoir was near the steering pump As for the error code it's difficult to say for certain without knowing the specifics of the code itself However if the incorrect wheel alignment is causing undue stress on the power steering system it might trigger a fault related to the steering assist motor or sensor I would advise going to a workshop They should be able to check it

For those following It was indeed a corroded connector on the power steering control module precisely as I suspected Cleaned it up applied some dielectric grease and everything is back to normal Total cost 95€ for the connector cleaner Thanks for the suggestions they at least pointed me in the right direction
