GLK Transmission Issues and Sensor Problems

I have a 2015 Mercedes GLK with a diesel engine and about 31000 km on the clock. Lately the engine warning light has come on and the gearbox seems to be in emergency mode. Shifting is unclean and I even hear some grinding noises. I read something about a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor, maybe related to low transmission oil? Has anyone experienced something similar?

I also own a GLK and had similar transmission issues some time ago. The error memory showed something about the transmission sensor. Before any major repairs, I would suggest checking the transmission oil level. Apparently, that is a very common cause for overheating problems and the sensor going off. It is a relatively easy thing to check.

Thanks for the advice. Where exactly is the transmission oil level indicator? Is it easy to access? And what kind of oil should I use if it needs topping up?

I am no expert, but I think it is best to let a workshop check that. You need special equipment to check the level correctly, and they know exactly which oil to use. In my case, the oil level was indeed too low, and after topping it up, the problems were gone. If the problem is more complex, they can also check the transmission sensor itself. Better safe than sorry.

Ok thanks a lot for the tip. I took it to a workshop and you were right. The transmission oil level was too low, and that caused the sensor to go crazy. They topped it up and cleared the error memory. Cost me 365€, but now it seems to be running fine again.
