GMC Acadia Power Steering Failure + Warning Light

Looking for help with steering problems in my 2016 GMC Acadia (70k km, gas). The steering wheel shakes quite a bit and feels really loose, plus theres a warning light on the dash. The power steering seems to be failing since its gotten really heavy to turn. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic so Im hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar steering system issues in their Acadia? What was the fix and how much did it cost? Mainly wondering if its likely the steering pump or something more serious.

As an Acadia owner myself (2013 GMC Acadia 3.6L), I faced nearly identical symptoms last season. The power steering issues started with intermittent warning lights and progressed to heavy steering, especially during low-speed maneuvers. The diagnosis revealed multiple issues: Main power steering pump was failing, Loose connection in the steering rack wiring harness, Wheel alignment was significantly off due to the system problems The steering pump failure was causing the entire power steering system to work improperly. The loose wiring connection at the steering rack was interrupting signals to the power steering control module. Required fixes: 1. Power steering pump replacement 2. Steering rack wiring harness repair 3. Full wheel alignment after component replacement This was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention, as failing power steering can lead to complete steering loss. The repair restored proper steering feel and eliminated the warning lights completely. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, particularly the heavy steering and warning lights. Would strongly suggest having the power steering system inspected by a certified shop, as these issues typically worsen quickly.

Thanks for that detailed response about your Acadia steering repair. My issue turned out to be similar, the power steering pump was leaking hydraulic fluid and the pressure hose had a small crack. The steering system repair sorted out both the shaking and the warning light. Did you notice any other related problems pop up after the fix? Also, curious about your repair costs since I paid about 850 Euro for parts and labor. The wheel alignment was an extra 120 Euro but definitely worth it to prevent uneven tire wear.

Had my Acadia serviced last week after seeing similar power steering problems. The mechanic found it was just a faulty cable connection to the steering system, much simpler than my original repair with the pump. The fix was straightforward and cost 95 Euro, which included testing the electrical connections to ensure the power steering was working correctly. Since that repair, the steering has been perfect, no warning lights or heavy steering issues. The hydraulic fluid levels are good and the electric steering components are all functioning normally. This repair was way less complex than my previous steering pump replacement you asked about. I havent seen any new problems pop up, and the steering feels responsive and smooth, especially during parking maneuvers. Your repair cost makes sense given they had to replace the pressure hose and deal with hydraulic fluid leaks. A wheel alignment is always smart after any steering system work to maintain proper handling.

After getting multiple opinions, I finally took my Acadia to a certified mechanic. The diagnosis was spot on, leaking hydraulic fluid from the power steering pump and a cracked pressure hose. I watched the mechanic test the steering system and could clearly see the fluid dripping. Total bill came to 970 Euro including parts, labor and wheel alignment. More than I wanted to spend but the steering wheel is now rock solid with no shaking. The electric steering assist works perfectly and that annoying warning light is finally gone. The wheel alignment made a huge difference in how the car handles on the highway. The shop also showed me how to check the power steering fluid level myself, which was helpful. No issues since the repair and definitely feels like money well spent. Good to know others have dealt with similar steering problems and got them resolved.
