GMC Sierra Washer Nozzle Freezing Fix Alert

My 2005 GMC Sierra diesel is having issues with the washer system during cold weather. The spray nozzles keep freezing up despite using winter washer fluid, and there is an error code stored in the system. I suspect the windshield washer heater might be faulty, but I am not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with frozen washer nozzles and found the heating element to be the culprit? Looking for experiences with repair solutions and approximate repair costs. The problem is making winter driving quite challenging when the windshield gets dirty and the wipers cannot clean it properly.

Thanks for the detailed response. My Sierra is an SLT model and the error code is P0480. The issue starts occurring at around -5 degrees, and yes, both nozzles freeze equally. I checked the fuse box and all washer motor related fuses seem fine. I had my last service at 95000 KM, and they did not spot any issues with the washer system back then. The washer fluid pump runs fine in warmer weather, which matches your experience with the heater element being the likely culprit. Would it make sense to first check the cable connections to the washer heater before replacing the entire unit? 95 Euro sounds reasonable if it solves the problem completely.

That is exactly the same error code and behavior I experienced with my Canyon. Since your symptoms match perfectly, including the temperature threshold and the pump working fine in warmer conditions, I am confident it is the same heating element issue. Starting with the cable connections is definitely the smart approach. The washer heater wiring often gets corroded near the connection points, causing intermittent heating failures. The fuse box check you did was a good first step, but these heating element problems typically occur at the component level. After my repair, I learned that preventive maintenance of the windshield wipers system, including checking the heating element connections during regular service intervals, helps avoid these winter driving hassles. At 95000 KM, this type of wear is quite common on these models. One tip: While getting it fixed, have them check the washer motor seals too. Thanks for helping narrow this down. Just had the cable connections checked and you were right, the main connection to the washer heater was corroded and partially detached. The shop found some water damage around the wiring harness too. The total repair came to 110 Euro since they had to replace a small section of the wiring harness along with fixing the heating element connection. They also cleaned out the clogged nozzles and confirmed the windshield wipers system is working properly now. Took it for a test drive last night when temperatures dropped to -7 degrees and the washer system worked perfectly, no more frozen nozzles or heater malfunction warnings. The windshield stays clean even in freezing conditions now. Really glad I checked the connections first before replacing the entire heating element. Will definitely add this to my regular maintenance checklist to prevent future issues. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction with this repair.
