Thanks for sharing your Town & Country experience. Mine seems very similar with the thermal window failures. I took it to a shop last week and they also found control module issues affecting the auto defrost system. Quick question, do you remember roughly what you paid for the full defroster repair? My mechanic quoted quite high but I want to compare. Also, has everything worked properly since the fix or have you noticed any other window heater problems?

Since getting my Town & Country repaired, the auto defrost system has worked flawlessly. The rear window heating functions perfectly now, and I have zero complaints about the front defroster performance. The fix was actually less complex than initially feared, it turned out the main issue was a heavily discharged battery causing electrical system problems. The total repair came to 290€, which included diagnostic work and replacing the defective battery that was causing the car defrost failures. This was significantly less than expected, especially since I initially thought the entire control module needed replacement. The key was finding a shop that properly diagnosed the root cause rather than just replacing parts. They identified that the weak battery was preventing proper voltage supply to the window heater systems. Once the new battery was installed, both the front and rear window defrosters started working at full strength again. If your quote is substantially higher, you might want to get a second opinion, especially if they are suggesting a full control module replacement without first checking the battery and electrical system thoroughly.

Thanks for all the input. Just wanted to update on my GrandVoyager situation. I went to a different mechanic who did proper testing of the auto defrost system. Like mentioned, they first checked the electrical components before jumping to major repairs. Turns out my rear window defroster had a broken connection in the heating grid, plus a failing relay for the front system. The total repair was 180€, which included fixing the grid connection and replacing the defective relay. Much better than the 500€ quote from the previous shop who wanted to replace the entire control module. The thermal window system now works great, both front and rear defrosters heat up quickly and clear the windows effectively. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of going with the first repair quote. The new shop took time to show me exactly what was wrong and fixed just what was needed. Best repair decision I made this year. No more visibility issues during cold mornings.

Had the same heating issue on my 2006 Chrysler Town & Country last winter. The rear window defroster and front defrost completely stopped working, showing similar symptoms to yours. After diagnostic testing, the problem turned out to be more complex than just the heating coils. The main control module was failing, which affected both the front and rear window heater systems. The defroster repair required replacing the control module and testing all heating elements in both systems. This was actually a serious electrical issue that affected multiple car systems, not just the defrosters. The job involved: Testing all heating coil connections, Replacing the defective control module, Checking rear window heating grid continuity, Verifying front defroster operation, Full system diagnostic scan The repair took about 4 hours total. For these models, when both front and rear systems fail simultaneously, its typically a control module problem rather than individual heating element failures. Would recommend getting the error code read first, this will point to whether its a module issue or individual defroster problem. Getting this fixed properly is important since it affects visibility and safety, especially during cold weather operation.
