Grandeur Diesel Intake Manifold Issue

My 2007 Hyundai Grandeur diesel has 117006 km. The check engine light is on, it jerks during acceleration, has reduced power, runs rough, stalls at idle, and has a strong exhaust smell. An error is stored. I suspect a defective intake manifold, maybe from scorching causing a vacuum leak, or a manifold sensor issue. Any insights on diagnosing this manifold issue?

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Hyundai Grandeur diesel with 117006 km is experiencing issues such as the check engine light, jerking during acceleration, reduced power, rough running, stalling at idle, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected cause is a defective intake manifold, possibly due to scorching leading to a vacuum leak or a manifold sensor issue. A suggested diagnostic method is using carb cleaner to detect leaks, but a professional smoke test confirmed the manifold was warped and leaking, necessitating replacement.

I had something similar happen with my Grandeur. The jerking, loss of power, and that awful smell sound familiar. Have you checked for leaks around the intake manifold? I sprayed carb cleaner around the manifold while the engine was running and listened for changes in the engine sound to find a vacuum leak. It's worth a shot before diving too deep.

Thanks for the prompt response. I'll try the carb cleaner test. What ultimately resolved the issue for you? Do you recall any specific error codes?

After the carb cleaner trick didn't fully work, I took it to my workshop. They smoke-tested the intake and confirmed the manifold was leaking badly. It was warped and cracked. Based on your symptoms and mileage, I'd bet your intake manifold is shot too. Get it properly diagnosed, it could be a warped manifold due to scorching like you said. If it is the manifold you're looking at a sizeable repair.

Following your recommendation, I took the Grandeur to a trusted workshop. They confirmed the intake manifold was defective, with scorching and leakage. The total repair cost was 1180€. Thanks for your assistance; it expedited the diagnostic process.
