Greiz brake fluid loss

I'm in a pickle! I drive a 2019 Honda Greiz with a gasoline engine, and recently the brake fluid level warning light popped up. I've got about 201343 km on the clock. I topped it off, but it keeps dropping, and I'm getting some seriously strange feedback from the brake pedal – like stepping on a sponge. Could it be the master cylinder, or am I looking at a bigger hydraulic brakes issue? Anyone else had this happen? It feels like my brakes are playing the maracas!

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Honda Greiz owner experienced a brake fluid level warning and a spongy brake pedal, suspecting a master cylinder or hydraulic issue. The problem was identified as worn brake pads and rotors, which caused the brake pistons to extend further, depleting the brake fluid. A thorough brake inspection and replacement of pads and rotors, along with a fluid flush, resolved the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar issue with my old Volvo. Brake fluid disappearing act, soft pedal, the whole shebang. Turned out to be worn brakes. Have you checked your pads and rotors?

Worn brakes, huh? I haven't really looked closely, just a quick glance. But would that really cause the fluid level to drop so quickly? I'm picturing it like a leaky water balloon, not a slow, steady drip from worn pads. Is there a link between how worn brakes can affect the master cylinder and brake fluid?

Yes, as the pads wear, the pistons in the calipers extend further to maintain contact with the rotors. This increased volume behind the piston pulls more fluid from the master cylinder reservoir, hence the lower level. Eventually you will run out. It's worth getting a thorough brake inspection. Best take it to a workshop.

Okay, that makes a weird sort of sense. Like the system is compensating and just running out of steam, or brake fluid, I guess. I took your advice and went to the shop. Turns out you were spot on! My front pads were almost gone. New pads and rotors all around, plus a fluid flush, and I'm back in business. Cost me about 480€, but worth it for peace of mind. Thanks for the help!
