GT86 Coolant Loss

Okay, so I'm a bit stressed. My 2017 Toyota GT86, gasoline engine, is giving me fits. It's got 148408 km on the clock, and the check engine light keeps popping on. I scanned it, and it says there's an error related to the coolant level being too low. I checked under the hood, and sure enough, the coolant is definitely low. I haven't seen any obvious leaks, though. Could it be the radiator hoses, radiator fluid, cooling fan, water pump, or even just air pockets?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Toyota GT86 is experiencing coolant loss, indicated by a check engine light and a low coolant level error. Despite no visible leaks, potential causes include issues with the radiator hoses, radiator fluid, cooling fan, water pump, or air pockets. A similar case suggested inspecting the water pump for residue and performing a pressure test on the cooling system to identify leaks. Ultimately, the problem was traced to a leaking thermostat housing, which was repaired.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had something similar happen on my GT86. Coolant light came on, but I didn't see any leaks either. How often are you having to top it up? It could be something simple, but if it's disappearing quickly, it's worth checking all the usual suspects like the water pump and radiator for any signs of seepage.

That's good to know it happened to someone else! I had a hunch it could be any of those things. How often were you topping yours up before you figured it out? And did you notice any other weird symptoms, like overheating or anything?

I was topping it up every week, which was definitely not normal. After careful inspection of the cooling system, I found some coolant residue around the water pump. I'd advise to take it to a workshop so they can perform a pressure test on the cooling system. This should help them find the leak quickly.

Thanks so much! I'll check the water pump more closely, but I think I'll take your advice and bring it in. Turns out the thermostat housing was leaking. Cost me 52€ to fix.
