GT86 Loud Exhaust After Cold Start

I have a 2013 Toyota GT86 with a gasoline engine, and recently I've been experiencing some rather annoying issues. My exhaust is definitely louder than usual, especially noticeable after a cold start – the engine sounds quite noisy then. I've also got an error code stored, and it seems to point towards the exhaust flaps not working. With just 34430 km on the clock, this is incredibly frustrating. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I am suspecting a defective exhaust flap, any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2013 Toyota GT86 experiencing a loud exhaust noise after a cold start, suspected to be caused by a defective exhaust flap. The issue is confirmed by an error code pointing to the exhaust flaps not working. A similar problem was resolved by replacing the flap motor, which was suggested as the likely cause. The recommended solution is to have the flap actuator checked and potentially replaced at a workshop.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had something similar happen on my GT86, although I didn't get an error code at first. The exhaust note was definitely louder, like something was blocked, and it sounded kinda raspy on startup. Is it like having a constant, low-level drone? Is the sound like when you get a flat tire on a bicycle and all the air is escaping?

Thanks for the reply! A constant low-level drone is exactly the noise! Did it get worse over time? And if you don't mind me asking, what was the fix, as it is getting annoying?

Yeah, it did get gradually worse. Honestly, I wouldn't mess with it too much yourself unless you really know your way around exhaust valves and actuators. It ended up being the flap motor itself. If I were you, I'd take it to a workshop and have them check the flap actuator. It cost me around 190€ to fix it.

Thanks, I really appreciate the insight! I'm taking it to the workshop. The flap motor was indeed the culprit. Exactly 190€, including the work. I appreciate the hint; saved me a lot of time!
