GX Gearbox Slipping

Hi, I have a 2004 Lexus GX with a gasoline engine and 95154 km on the clock. I think I have a transfer case oil wear fault. The gearbox slips/shifts uncleanly. Could this be defective gears?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Lexus GX owner experiences gearbox slipping and suspects a transfer case oil wear fault, questioning if defective gears could be the cause. Another GX owner suggests checking the gear oil level and for any oil leakage, as well as considering changing the gear oil. However, they also share that in their experience, defective gears required professional repair. Ultimately, the issue was confirmed to be defective gears, and the repair cost was 330€.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I drive a GX too. Gearbox issues are never fun. Is the gear oil level correct? Maybe check for oil leakage first. Grinding noises can also point to transfer fluid problems. Have you checked that?

Thanks, I will check that. I was wondering if it's worth just changing the gear oil first?

Worth a shot, I suppose. But when mine was slipping like that, the fresh oil didn't solve the problem. Turned out the gears were indeed defective, and needed professional attention. I'd suggest getting it looked at by a workshop before things get worse.
