Headlight and Windshield Washer Systems Not Working

My 2016 Mercedes B Klasse with an electric engine is giving me trouble. The headlight cleaning system seems dead at 84025 km, and the windshield washer system isn't working either. I've checked the fuses, and they seem fine. Could this be a clog, or is it a larger malfunction?

Summary of the thread

The headlight and windshield washer systems on a 2016 Mercedes B Klasse were not functioning. The issue was suspected to be a common component failure, possibly involving the shared pump or a defective cable connection. After checking the fuses and considering potential clogs or leaks, it was suggested to inspect the wiring and relay associated with the pump. The problem was ultimately traced to a bad connection at the pump, which was resolved by cleaning and replacing a corroded wire section, restoring the systems to working order.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That's a bummer. Since both the headlight washers and windshield washers are failing, it points to a common component. Often, they share the same pump. A defective cable connection to the pump or relay is a prime suspect. Locate the washer fluid reservoir and trace the wires leading from the pump. See if anything looks loose or corroded. Have you checked the fluid level itself? A leak might cause the pump to run dry and eventually burn out.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you mention 'relay,' what does that do, and where would I find it? I'm good with tools, but electrical stuff is tricky. Also, is there a good way to check for a leak without waiting for a puddle to form?

A relay is basically an electrically operated switch. It allows a small current to control a larger one, like the power going to the pump. The relay for the washer system is usually in the fuse box, often under the hood. The owner's manual should have a diagram. As for the leak, look for dampness around the reservoir and along the hoses leading to the nozzles. If you're not comfortable troubleshooting the electrical side, a workshop visit might be the best bet to prevent further problems.

I took your advice and brought it in. Turns out you were spot on! It was a bad connection at the pump. They cleaned it, replaced a short section of corroded wire, and now everything is working perfectly again. Grand total: 165€. Thanks for steering me in the right direction!
