Heavy steering and shaking wheel in VW Polo needs urgent fix

Recently noticed my steering has gotten really heavy and the wheel shakes while driving. The mechanics last visit left me skeptical of their diagnosis. As a 2015 Golf TDI owner, I encountered very similar symptoms. The heavy steering and wheel vibration pointed to a faulty steering angle sensor, which interfaces with both the electronic stability system and traction control. The flickering warning light is a telltale sign. In my case, the steering angle sensor needed recalibration after becoming decalibrated during routine service work. The wheel alignment also needed adjustment since the sensor was providing incorrect readings to the power steering system. Request they specifically check the steering angle sensor calibration and alignment problems, as these symptoms often get misdiagnosed as mechanical steering column issues.

Had the exact same issue with my 2018 Polo last winter. That heavy steering feel and shaking was quite scary, especially when the electronic stability light started flashing. Got it fixed and turned out the wheel alignment was off, plus they had to recalibrate the angle sensor after finding it was misaligned. The traction control system kept acting up until they sorted it all out. Really glad I got it checked when I did. The steering angle sensor recalibration and coding work on my Golf came to 195€. The electronic stability system and traction control have worked flawlessly since the repair. The automotive sensors are quite sensitive, even minor calibration issues can trigger multiple system warnings. Having the right diagnostic equipment to properly reset the steering sensor made all the difference. The wheel alignment check was crucial too, as incorrect readings from a miscalibrated angle sensor can mask actual alignment problems. No issues have surfaced in the 8 months since the fix. The steering feels properly weighted now and the electronic stability light stays off as it should. Getting it addressed promptly likely prevented additional wear on related components.

Going back to my Polo issue, took it to a different mechanic this time who actually knew what they were talking about. Total bill came to 280€ including the steering sensor recalibration, electronic stability system check, and a fresh alignment. The steering column feels solid now, no more shakiness or heaviness. Really impressed with how the traction control and stability systems work together smoothly again. Had to wait a couple days for the parts but the actual repair only took about 3 hours. Definitely learned my lesson about getting these warning signs checked out quickly. Been driving it daily for the past few months with zero issues. The peace of mind was worth every cent, nothing worse than unreliable steering when you need it most.
