Help Needed: BMW Z4 Engine Warning Light and Fault Code 02A9A

Hello everyone, I own a BMW Z4 and recently encountered some issues after the car had been sitting for a couple of months. The engine warning light (MIL) and transmission warning light have illuminated. Additionally, the car is slower to start, taking twice as many turns as usual. I checked the fault codes and found 02A9A, which indicates a cam sync/cam inlet error. The car was running perfectly the last time I drove it. Has anyone experienced similar issues or have any advice on how to resolve this? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! - Chopper007

Summary of the thread

A BMW Z4 owner is experiencing engine and transmission warning lights, along with slow starting after the car sat unused for months. The fault code 02A9A suggests a cam sync/cam inlet error. A possible cause could be a weak battery, but the battery voltage appears normal. Suggested solutions include checking the camshaft position sensor and its wiring for damage or disconnection, and testing the sensor's functionality if no visible issues are found.

Start by checking the battery voltage and condition, as a weak or discharged battery can cause multiple warning lights and starting issues. Ensure the battery terminals are clean and securely connected. If the battery is fine, consider inspecting the camshaft position sensor and its wiring for any signs of damage or disconnection. Let me know how it goes or if you have further questions!

Hi thanks for the reply, had a new battery 2yrs ago, and when not used is on a battery trickle charger. Battery was 12.9v this morning when i disconnected the battery conditioner. Where is the sensor located? I have also set Carly to monitor the battery over the next 24hrs

The camshaft position sensor on your BMW Z4 is typically located near the top of the engine, close to the camshaft itself. It's often found on the side of the engine head. Check for any loose connections or visible damage to the sensor and its wiring. If everything looks fine, you might need to test the sensor's functionality with a multimeter.
