HHR Check Engine Light Fuel Consumption

Check engine light and high fuel consumption on my 2006 Chevrolet HHR gasoline engine with only 41007 km. Code reader points to an issue with the inlet VANOS mechanics. I suspect a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply issue. Has anyone else run into this on their HHR?

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a 2006 Chevrolet HHR experiencing a check engine light and high fuel consumption. The issue is suspected to be related to the inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly due to a defect in the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply problem. A suggested solution is to inspect the solenoid valve and its electrical connections for damage or corrosion, as well as checking for engine oil sludge that could affect the VVT system. Replacing the camshaft solenoid valve is recommended if these inspections confirm the fault.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I have experienced similar symptoms on my HHR. Given your description, it is plausible that the camshaft solenoid valve is faulty. Variable valve timing (VVT) systems are sensitive to oil quality and pressure. Inspect the solenoid valve electrical connector for any corrosion or damage. Check for any signs of excessive engine oil sludge, as this can interfere with the operation of the VVT system. The valve timing being off could result in the check engine light and higher fuel consumption.

Did your symptoms appear suddenly, or did they develop gradually? Was there any engine misfire along with increased fuel consumption? I am just trying to narrow down the cause of my problem.

In my case, the increased fuel consumption was gradual, but the check engine light appeared quite suddenly. Although I didn't experience a noticeable engine misfire, the engine felt somewhat underpowered. I ended up replacing the camshaft solenoid valve, which resolved the issue. Considering the relatively low mileage of your vehicle, it may be worth having a workshop inspect the solenoid valve and its power supply before proceeding with a replacement. A diagnostic test can confirm the fault.

Appreciated for your advice. I'll get it checked out by a workshop ASAP. I hate intermittent electronic issues. The projected repair cost is around 250€, which is far better than replacing the timing chain, which was also on my mind. I will post information when I have it. Thanks again!
