HHR Incorrect Vehicle Coding

I've got a head-scratcher with my 2007 Chevy HHR with a gasoline engine. It's only got 56741 km on it, and recently the check engine light popped on. I scanned it and it's throwing a fault code related to incorrect vehicle coding. The infotainment system keeps flashing an error message, and now there's also a message on the speedometer. Could it really be a coding issue? Has anyone run into this before? Seems odd to happen out of nowhere.

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Chevy HHR with low mileage displayed a check engine light and fault code related to incorrect vehicle coding, along with error messages on the infotainment system and speedometer. The issue was suspected to be a coding problem but was ultimately diagnosed as a faulty body control module after a professional scan. The solution involved recoding the module, resolving the error messages.

That's strange. I had a similar issue with my Opel Astra, though it was a different fault code. Same symptoms though: error message in the infotainment, and eventually the speedometer started acting up. I wouldn't immediately jump to a coding problem. Sometimes a faulty control module can cause those kinds of phantom errors. Have you tried clearing the code and seeing if it comes back?

I cleared the code, and it came back after a day or so. When you say 'control module,' which one are you referring to exactly? And did you ever figure out what was causing the error in your Opel? It’s interesting that the symptoms are so alike.

In my case with the Astra, it ended up being a faulty ABS control module throwing everything off. The garage guys ran a more in-depth scan with a professional diagnostic scanner, and that pinpointed it. Honestly, with the code returning so quickly, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to get a proper scan done. Could save you a lot of guessing and potential damage. You might need a new module or a re-flash. Good luck!

I appreciate the advice. I took it to a local mechanic, and after a proper scan, it turned out you were right – it was the body control module that needed to be recoded. Cost me 360€ to get it sorted, but at least the error messages are gone! Glad I didn't try messing with the coding myself.
