HHR oil sensor fault

I own a 2007 Chevrolet HHR with a gasoline engine and 182798 km on the clock. Recently, I've been getting an error message in the speedometer related to the engine oil. The error memory stores a fault, and the speedometer warning light comes on, sometimes accompanied by the oil pressure warning lamp. Could this be connected to the oil level sensor, and if so, what are the common causes?

Summary of the thread

The 2007 Chevrolet HHR displayed an error message related to the engine oil, with warning lights indicating a potential issue with the oil level sensor. The problem was suspected to be linked to a faulty connection to the sensor. A similar past experience suggested checking for corroded or loose connections. Upon inspection by a professional, it was confirmed that the cable/plug connection was defective, and repairing it resolved the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 307. Same symptoms: oil warning lights and error messages. In my case, it turned out to be a dodgy connection to the oil level sensor. Have you checked the cable and plug going to the sensor? Give them a wiggle and see if anything changes. Sometimes it's just a corroded or loose connection. Could save you a lot of hassle!

Thanks for the quick response! When you say 'dodgy connection,' do you mean a physically loose connection, or was it something more complex like damaged wiring? I've visually inspected the plug, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for beyond obvious damage.

Well, with my Peugeot, it was more than just visibly loose. The pins inside the connector were corroded. I cleaned them up a bit, and the problem went away for a while, but eventually, it came back. I'd suggest cleaning the contacts with some electrical contact cleaner if you have some. But honestly, if you're not comfortable messing with it, it might be worth getting a professional to take a look. Could save you from causing more problems down the road.

I appreciate the advice. Based on the symptoms and your experience, I took it to a local workshop. They confirmed that the cable/plug connection to the oil level sensor was indeed defective, just as suggested. The repair cost me 95€, and the issue is now resolved. Thanks again for your help!
