HHR Overheating Active Air Flap
Summary of the thread
The 2007 Chevrolet HHR is experiencing overheating issues, particularly in stop-and-go traffic, with the check engine light on. The problem is suspected to be related to the active air flap, potentially due to a defective electromechanism. A fault code confirmed the issue with the active air flap, and it was advised to seek professional repair to prevent further damage. The issue was resolved by a mechanic, confirming the electromechanism as the cause.

Got the fault code read, and it points directly to the active air flap. I'm wondering if it's something I can fix myself, or is it best left to a professional? I'm not too familiar with these newer systems.

A specific fault code for the flap makes it pretty clear. While some things are DIY-able, dealing with thermal management and potential overheating isn't something I'd mess with unless you're experienced. A bad overheating incident can cause serious damage. I'd advise getting a quote from a trusted workshop.

Appreciate the advice. Took it to a local mechanic, and you were right, it was the electromechanism for the active air flap. Cost me 590€ to get it sorted, but at least I know it's done properly and won't cause further damage.

Sounds like a thermal management issue. I had a similar problem on an older vehicle, though not an HHR. Check engine light and overheating... did you pull the fault code? That would give you a clearer picture. Could be the flap motor itself is gone.
