Hiace auto transmission fault

My 2022 Toyota Hiace diesel is throwing codes and driving poorly. Check engine and transmission lights are on. The gearbox slips and shifts horribly, with grinding noises. Error memory is full of transmission faults. Seems like the auto transmission converter is defective. Has anyone seen this before?

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my Hiace. Any engine surging at highway speeds, especially when trying to maintain a steady speed? What mileage are you at?

Yes, there IS engine surging! Especially noticeable around 80-90 km/h. I'm at 136533 km. Was it definitely the torque converter for you? What exactly was faulty?

Yep, the surging confirms it. It's likely the torque converter. The lock-up clutch inside the converter is probably failing. I'd recommend taking it to a reliable workshop with automatic gearbox experience for a proper diagnosis and repair.

Thanks a million! I feared it was something major. Took it to a specialist and you were spot on – torque converter lock-up clutch failed. Cost me 2120€ for the repair, but it's driving like new again. Appreciate the help!
