Hiace EGR Valve Issues

I've got a 2010 Toyota Hiace, diesel engine, with 131618 km on the clock. Recently, I've noticed a drop in engine power, the check engine light is on, and there's some smoke when I accelerate. It's running rough, fuel consumption is up, and it jerks a bit when accelerating, plus there's a loud hissing sound sometimes. Could this be the EGR valve acting up?

Sounds nasty! Rough idle, smoke, check engine light... all point to some serious issues. The EGR valve is a likely culprit, especially with those symptoms. Have you checked for any error codes? Maybe a cheap OBD2 scanner will tell you something!

I haven't checked the error codes yet. Is it possible for the EGR valve to be jammed open or closed, and would that cause these specific symptoms? Or could the hissing be a vacuum leak?

Yeah, a jammed EGR valve, either open or closed, could definitely cause those problems. If it's stuck open, you'll get a rough idle and reduced power. Closed, and you might see the smoke and jerking, though a vacuum leak is also a possibility with the hissing. With these kinds of issues, it's worth taking it to a good workshop to get it sorted. Much better to be sure about what it is!

Thanks for the advice. Took it to the workshop; you were right, it was the EGR valve. Defective and needed replacing. Cost me 355€, but it's running smoothly now.
