Hiace engine power loss and smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Toyota Hiace diesel with 129,465 km is experiencing engine power loss and excessive smoke during acceleration. The issue is suspected to be related to backpressure in the exhaust system. A blocked diesel particulate filter is identified as a likely cause. The recommended solution is to have the filter checked and possibly replaced by a professional mechanic, which resolves the problem and restores the vehicle's performance.

I'm not sure about a regeneration light; I haven't noticed it. As for the vehicle inspection, it was about six months ago. Is there a way to check the diesel filter myself, or is it best to take it somewhere?

Likely the filter, based on your description. I would take it to a workshop. Trying to clean it yourself can cause more problems.

I took your advice and brought my Hiace to a local mechanic. Turns out, the diesel particulate filter was indeed defective and needed replacing. The whole ordeal cost me around 1550€, but at least my van is running smoothly again! Really appreciate the help.

Sounds like a blocked diesel particulate filter. Has the regeneration light come on? When was your last vehicle inspection?
