Hiace engine power loss and smoke

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2020 Toyota Hiace diesel. It's done 129465 km and lately, the engine power seems significantly reduced. Also, there's a lot of smoke coming out when I try to accelerate. I've checked fluid levels and obvious leaks, but I'm at a loss. Could this be a backpressure problem in the exhaust system?

Sounds like a blocked diesel particulate filter. Has the regeneration light come on? When was your last vehicle inspection?

I'm not sure about a regeneration light; I haven't noticed it. As for the vehicle inspection, it was about six months ago. Is there a way to check the diesel filter myself, or is it best to take it somewhere?

Likely the filter, based on your description. I would take it to a workshop. Trying to clean it yourself can cause more problems.

I took your advice and brought my Hiace to a local mechanic. Turns out, the diesel particulate filter was indeed defective and needed replacing. The whole ordeal cost me around 1550€, but at least my van is running smoothly again! Really appreciate the help.
