Hiace fuel consumption and rough idle

My 2010 Toyota Hiace with a gasoline engine is giving me grief. It's only done 42192 km. Lately, the fuel consumption has gone through the roof! And getting it started in the mornings is a nightmare, it coughs and splutters. I'm starting to think it might be the engine throttle playing up? Or maybe something with the accelerator pedal module? Could that even cause these issues? Any help would be amazing!

Those symptoms do sound like they could be related to the throttle. Has the engine idle been rough too? Maybe something is up with the air intake as well. Have you checked the throttle position sensor?

Rough engine idle, yeah, that's a good way to put it. It's not smooth at all, kinda jumpy. Throttle position sensor, hmm, I haven't checked that, not really sure where to find it or how to test it! Could a defective accelerator pedal module really cause those problems too?

Yeah, a faulty accelerator pedal module can definitely cause those problems. It's all connected to the throttle valve. Honestly, with those symptoms and your mileage, it's probably best to get it checked by a workshop. They'll be able to diagnose it properly.

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to a local workshop, and you were spot on. They said the accelerator pedal module was defective and causing the throttle valve to act up. Cost me 205€ to get it sorted, but at least it's running smoothly again now! Really appreciate the help!
