Highlander power steering fault

I'm having a power steering fault with my 2004 Toyota Highlander Hybrid (84245 km). The steering wheel vibrates noticeably, leading to a spongy sensation. My diagnostic tool reveals a stored error related to the steering system. I'm experiencing increased effort when steering; it feels as if the power assist is failing intermittently. Could a defective cable or plug connection be the culprit?

I've experienced similar issues with my Highlander. Does the steering feel heavier at low speeds, and lighter at higher speeds? Is the EPS light illuminated on the dashboard?

The steering is noticeably heavier at lower speeds, almost as if the power steering is absent entirely. At higher speeds, the effort does decrease, but the vibrations remain. I haven't noticed an EPS light specifically, but there is a general warning indicator. Could it still be the EPS even without the specific light?

Yes, it sounds very much like the issue I had. In my instance it was a defective cable connection. I recommend a workshop diagnostic to confirm. I ended up with a bill of 95€.

Thank you for sharing your experience! A defective cable connection aligns with my initial suspicions. I will schedule a workshop visit for a thorough diagnostic assessment. I appreciate your prompt response and valuable insight; it has undoubtedly eased my unease. Knowing the repair cost you had to face gives me an idea of what to expect.
