Hilux DPF issue
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Toyota Hilux diesel is experiencing reduced engine power and smoke from the exhaust, potentially linked to a diesel particulate filter (DPF) issue. Symptoms like power loss and smoke suggest a blocked DPF, possibly causing backpressure problems. While DPF cleaning products can be attempted, a proper vehicle inspection is recommended to diagnose and resolve the issue effectively.

I haven't tried any DPF cleaning products yet. I'll check the fuel efficiency figures; I haven't been paying close attention. What happened with yours in the end?

I tried the cleaning additives first, but honestly, they didn't do much. I was hoping for a cheap fix. In the end, I bit the bullet and took it to a workshop. They ran a proper diagnostic and confirmed it was a defective DPF. They quoted me around 1550€ for the replacement, which stung, but it solved the problem instantly. I really recommend getting a proper vehicle inspection!

Understood. I appreciate the advice. A vehicle inspection sounds like the best course of action. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I had a similar drama with my Hilux – though it wasn’t the exact same year model. Power loss and smoke sounds suspiciously like a blocked DPF. How’s the fuel efficiency been? Has it dropped off a cliff? If so, that’s another big clue pointing towards backpressure issues because of the DPF. Have you tried any DPF cleaning products?
