Hilux rough idle misfire

I've got a 2003 Toyota Hilux with a gasoline engine that's giving me some grief. It's got around 99k km on the clock. Lately, it's been running really rough, especially at idle where it sometimes stalls completely. The check engine light is also on and I've noticed some jerking when accelerating. I'm suspecting it might be related to a defective ignition coil, possibly a dodgy cable or plug connection. Any thoughts?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 307. Rough running, stalling... drove me nuts! Have you checked for any specific error codes with a reader? With my Pug it also turned out to be an issue with the ignition system, maybe even one of the spark plugs. Might want to take a look at yours.

Thanks for the insight! I did run an OBD reader and it pointed to a misfire on one of the cylinders. So, you're saying your Peugeot had similar misfire issues that stemmed from the ignition coils or plugs?

Exactly! The error code said "misfire" too. Changing the plugs didn't do the trick, so it had to be coil pack. I ended up taking it to a workshop, because I had no clue about it at that time! They diagnosed it pretty quickly. I reckon you should get yours checked out by a professional too, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I took your advice and brought it to a local mechanic. Turns out it was a faulty ignition coil, just like we suspected. New one cost me 95€ including installation, and the Hilux is running smoothly again. Cheers!
