Hilux transfer case limp mode
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Toyota Hilux diesel experienced issues with the transfer case being stuck in limp mode, causing the gearbox to slip and shift uncleanly. The problem was suspected to be linked to the ABS system. After consulting with others who had similar experiences, it was confirmed that the ABS was indeed causing the transfer case issue. A quick reset resolved the problem without incurring any costs.

Interesting! I was indeed doing a bit of off-roading when it happened. Can you give me some more information? Did you read out any diagnostic trouble codes (fault codes) at that time?

Yep, pretty much the same. The codes pointed towards some weird interaction between the transfer case and ABS. I was scared of a huge repair bill at first, but honestly, I just took it to a workshop and they sorted it out pretty quickly. I could not figure it out on my own.

Thanks a bunch for the insight! Turns out, the issue was indeed ABS related and was triggering the transfer case to go into limp mode. Luckily, it didn't cost me anything to fix, and after a quick reset it worked like new!

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had something similar happen on my Hilux. Was it by any chance after you were messing around with the gear selector or maybe some overzealous traction control kicking in? It threw me for a loop, that's for sure.
