Hilux Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor Error
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Toyota Hilux with a diesel engine is experiencing a Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor error, resulting in the MIL light, error codes, gearbox emergency mode, slipping, unclean shifting, and grinding noises. The core problem is suspected to be related to the gearbox oil level. A low oil level can cause overheating and insufficient lubrication, leading to these symptoms. The suggested solution is to check and top up the gearbox oil and replace the faulty sensor, which resolved the issue in this case.

Good call, I didn't mention it. The symptoms are pretty much constant, hot or cold, but maybe a little bit worse after 20 minutes driving. How did you resolve it, and how much did it cost?

In my case, the garage identified the oil level as being too low, causing overheating problems due to insufficient lubrication. I had the same symptoms: slipping gears and the engine warning light. I'd suggest going to a workshop; they'll know how to proceed.

Thanks! You were spot on. The gearbox oil was indeed low. They topped it up and replaced the faulty sensor. The final bill was 365€, but now it runs like a dream. Cheers for the help!

I had similar transmission issues in my Hilux. Are the symptoms more frequent when the engine temperature rises after several minutes of driving?
