Honda Brio Steering Controls Dead, Owners Seek Fix

Hey everyone! My 2014 Honda Brio's steering wheel buttons have completely stopped working. None of them respond when pressed, even after multiple attempts. I'm suspecting an issue with the multifunction steering wheel system itself. Has anyone dealt with a similar problem? I'd really appreciate hearing about repair solutions that worked for you and what the actual problem turned out to be. Also, how much did the fix cost? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Honda Brio owner reports that the steering wheel buttons have stopped working entirely, suspecting an issue with the multifunction steering wheel system. A similar problem in a Honda City was resolved by replacing a worn-out wiring harness in the steering wheel, which took about 3-4 hours to repair. The suggested solution is to consult a certified mechanic experienced with Honda airbag systems to safely address the potential wiring issue. The owner plans to have the vehicle inspected and will update on the outcome.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2012 Honda City (got some experience working on cars as a hobby). The steering wheel controls just died one day, super annoying, especially for audio and cruise control. Turned out the wiring harness in the steering wheel was worn out and some cables were damaged. Took it to my regular workshop, and they had to replace the entire cable assembly in the steering wheel. The whole thing, including labor, set me back about 95 Euro. It's been working perfectly since then, no more dead buttons! But before you jump to conclusions, have you noticed any intermittent issues before they completely stopped working? Does your airbag warning light come on? Did this happen suddenly or gradually? This might help narrow down if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Honda Jazz and Brio often share similar electrical components, so I might be able to offer more specific advice once you share these details.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine just stopped working suddenly last week, no warning signs before that. The airbag light hasn't come on at all. I've checked my service records, and the last maintenance was done at 103,040 KM with no issues reported for the steering controls. What's interesting is that there wasn't any gradual failure, everything was working fine one evening, and the next morning, none of the buttons responded. No clicking sound, nothing. I was thinking it might be a fuse issue, but after reading your post, I'm starting to suspect it could be the wiring harness like in your case. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair took? I need to plan around my schedule if it's going to take more than a few hours.

Hey again! Yeah, that sudden failure without warning sounds exactly like what happened to my City. It's pretty typical for these wiring harness issues, they work until they don't, you know? The repair on my car took around 3-4 hours total. My mechanic had to carefully disassemble the steering wheel (there's that airbag to deal with), replace the cable assembly, and put everything back together. They actually showed me the old harness afterward, you could clearly see where the wires had worn through. Since your symptoms are identical to what I experienced (sudden complete failure, no airbag light, no gradual issues), I'm pretty confident it's the same problem. Mine also had no clicking sound when it failed, just completely dead buttons. One thing though, make sure you go to someone who knows what they're doing with the airbag system. My regular guy is certified for Honda repairs, which made me feel a lot better about them handling the steering wheel disassembly. Tell you what, once you get it checked out, let us know what they find. Would be interesting to see if it's the same issue. These Honda steering wheel assemblies are pretty similar across models from that era.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! This really helps me understand what I might be dealing with. I'll definitely look for a certified mechanic who has experience with Honda airbag systems, that's a great point about safety that I hadn't even considered. I've already called a few workshops and found one that specializes in Honda repairs. They've got an opening next Tuesday, so I'll take it in then. The 3-4 hour timeframe you mentioned helps a lot with planning, I can probably drop it off in the morning and pick it up after work. 95 Euro sounds pretty reasonable for fixing something this important. I was worried it might be a much more expensive repair, so that's actually a relief. I'll definitely update here once I get it fixed and let you know if it turns out to be the same wiring harness issue. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's made me feel a lot more confident about getting this sorted out!
