Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't specifically checked the transfer fluid level yet. Is that easy to do on the BR-V? Where exactly would I locate the fill point? And if it's low, what kind of transfer fluid should I be topping it up with?

On the Subaru, it was a pain to get to. Honestly, based on what you're describing and my own experience, I'd just get it to a workshop. Probably mechanical wear inside.

Appreciate the advice. I took it to a trusted mechanic, and it turned out to be defective gears in the transfer case, just like I feared. Repair cost was 330€. Thanks for confirming my initial thoughts!

Hmm, sounds familiar. I had something similar happen with my old Subaru Forester. Different car, of course, but the symptoms were almost identical. You checked the transfer fluid level?
