Could a problem with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) cause these symptoms? The injection system relies on the ECU.

While a faulty ECU could cause those symptoms, it's less likely than a simple wiring or connector problem, considering the car's age. But don't rule it out. I'd suggest a diagnostic check at a good workshop. They can pinpoint the problem more accurately.

Those symptoms definitely point to an injection system issue. Have you checked the wiring and connectors for the fuel injectors? A loose or corroded connection could cause those problems. Also, check for small fuel leaks around the injector seals, which could explain the fuel consumption and stalling.
