Honda Clarity EV Cooling Crisis: Check Your Coolant!

Hey everyone! My 2014 Honda Clarity EV is acting up, warning light on the dash, engine overheating, and low coolant level. Pretty sure the coolant might be the culprit, but I'd love to hear from others who've dealt with similar issues. Has anyone had this combination of problems before? What did your mechanic find and how was it fixed? Looking for some real-world experiences before taking it to the shop.

Hey there! I've got some experience with EVs . I had a similar issue with my 2016 Honda e (pretty close to your Clarity!). Got those same symptoms, warning lights and overheating alerts. Took it to my regular workshop and turns out the coolant was critically low, which is super important for the battery temperature management system in EVs. The fix was pretty straightforward, they did a thorough check for leaks (thankfully found none), topped up the coolant, and bled the system. Cost me about 52.50€. Been running smoothly since then. Quick question though, have you noticed any puddles under your car or any sweet-smelling liquid? Also, when was the last time you had your coolant checked? These details would help figure out if you're dealing with the same thing. FYI, these cooling issues can be more serious in EVs than traditional cars, so I'd recommend getting it checked soon! Let me know more details about your situation, and I'll try to help further.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I was worried it might be something major. Last service was about 3 months ago at 136738 km, and they didn't mention any coolant issues then. Haven't spotted any puddles under the car, but I'll definitely keep an eye out now. Seems like we're dealing with similar symptoms, good to hear it was a relatively simple fix in your case. I'll schedule a check-up right away to be on the safe side, especially given what you mentioned about EV cooling systems. I'm just glad it's probably not the battery itself! Thanks for the heads up about checking for leaks too. Really appreciate the detailed advice, this community's always so helpful!

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up, glad I could help ease your mind a bit! Yeah, my Honda e's been running great since that coolant top-up. Just wanted to add, since you mentioned your last service was 3 months ago, it might be worth asking them to double-check the work from then. Sometimes these issues can develop pretty quickly, but it's a bit odd if they didn't catch anything during the service. You know what's funny? After my coolant incident, I actually started doing quick visual checks of the coolant level through the reservoir every couple of weeks. It's become kind of a habit now, and it's saved me from any repeat scares. Super easy to do, takes like 30 seconds tops! Also, since you're not seeing any puddles (just like in my case), that's actually a good sign. Might just be a gradual decrease rather than a major leak. But definitely get it checked soon, these EV cooling systems are pretty sophisticated, and it's better to catch any issues early. Keep me posted on what they find! Always curious to learn more about these quirks in our EVs.

Thanks for all the great advice! You're absolutely right about making those regular coolant checks a habit, definitely going to start doing that myself. Just booked an appointment for tomorrow morning, and I'll make sure to ask them about the recent service too. It's super reassuring to hear that your Honda's been running smoothly since the fix. I'll probably start doing those 30-second checks you mentioned, sounds like a smart preventive measure. Better safe than sorry with these EV systems, right? Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this info. I'll update you once I get the results from the shop. Fingers crossed it's just a simple top-up like yours was! Thanks again for helping a fellow EV owner out!
