Honda Crossroad automatic transmission Park issue

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my 2009 Honda Crossroad (gasoline engine). It's got about 168,000 km on it. The main problem is that it sometimes won't start because it seems like the automatic transmission is not properly registering that it's in Park. The check engine light is also on, and I've noticed some occasional slipping/unclean shifting. I scanned the car, and there's an error code related to the transmission. From what I've read, the control unit might be the culprit. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Honda Crossroad is experiencing issues with the automatic transmission not registering the Park position, preventing the car from starting. The check engine light is on, and there are occasional shifting problems, with an error code pointing to the transmission. The problem is suspected to be related to the transmission control unit, similar to a case with an Opel Insignia, where replacing the control module resolved the issue. The suggested solution is to replace the defective control unit, which is being undertaken by a mechanic.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello, I had a similar issue with my old 2012 Opel Insignia. Same symptoms: car wouldn't start in Park, check engine light, and some rough shifting. In my case, it was also related to the automatic transmission not recognizing the Park position. The error was also stored. Did you check the shift lock solenoid by any chance?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't specifically checked the shift lock solenoid yet. I was mainly focusing on the control unit since the error code seemed to point in that direction. Was your Opel's problem also the control unit or was it actually the solenoid?

In my case, it turned out not to be the solenoid directly, but rather a fault within the transmission control module that was causing the solenoid to not function correctly. Ultimately, I had to take it to a workshop. The mechanics there had to replace the transmission control module. Given your symptoms and the error code, I would advise you to do the same.

Thanks a lot for the insight! It seems my problem is very similar to yours. I took it to my trusted mechanic and after taking a closer look, he confirmed that the control unit is defective as suspected. We're replacing it and I'm looking at a bill of around 1000€. Hopefully, that fixes everything. Thanks again for sharing your experience!
