Honda Fit Torque Converter Issue

I've got a 2008 Honda Fit with a gasoline engine. The check engine light and transmission indicator light are on. I'm also noticing slippage during gear shifts, sometimes with a grinding noise. I scanned for error codes and got one related to the torque converter lock-up clutch. Could this be a defective automatic transmission converter?

Summary of the thread

A 2008 Honda Fit is experiencing issues with the check engine and transmission indicator lights, along with slippage and grinding during gear shifts. An error code related to the torque converter lock-up clutch suggests a potential defect in the automatic transmission converter. While other issues like low fluid or a bad solenoid could cause similar symptoms, the combination of error code and symptoms strongly indicates a torque converter problem. A professional evaluation confirmed the defective torque converter, leading to necessary repairs.

Sounds plausible. Those Fits sometimes have auto transmission issues. Slipping and grinding definitely ain't good. Does it only happen when the engine is cold? And is it all gears or just some?

The slippage and grinding seem to occur regardless of engine temperature. It's more pronounced in the lower gears, but I've noticed it in higher gears too. Considering the error code and these symptoms, how certain can we be it's the torque converter before opening the transmission?

Well, with auto transmissions, it's always hard to be 100% without proper diagnostics. The error code and symptoms point that way, however, other things, like low fluid or a bad solenoid, could mimic some of those issues. It's a gamble without digging deeper. Given your description and the error code, converter failure does seem highly likely. I'd say bite the bullet and go to a transmission specialist.

I sought professional evaluation as you suggested. The workshop confirmed a defective torque converter; the repair, including parts and labor, came to 2120€. Thanks for your help.
