Honda HRV Diesel Power Loss & Stalling, EGR Valve Issue?

Thanks for sharing your experience! My HRV has 38885 KM and just had its latest service last month. I'm curious, when your EGR valve was replaced, did you notice any immediate difference in the engine's performance? Mine's been particularly rough during the first few minutes after starting up. The vibration is really noticeable when I'm stopped at lights. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything else before I take it to the shop. Did your mechanic mention any other potential issues to watch out for?

Hey again! Absolutely, I remember when I got my CR-V fixed, the difference was like night and day! As soon as I started the car after the EGR replacement, the rough idle completely disappeared. That annoying vibration at stoplights? Gone instantly. You know, it's interesting you mention the roughness during cold starts because that's exactly how mine behaved too. Those first few minutes were awful, it would shake like it was about to stall. The exhaust smell was especially bad during those cold starts. My mechanic actually did a thorough check while he was at it. He mentioned that EGR issues can sometimes be related to carbon build-up in the intake manifold too. In my case, he cleaned that out while replacing the valve, kind of a two-birds-with-one-stone deal. Your mileage is pretty similar to what mine was when I had the problem. One thing I'd definitely suggest, make sure they check the EGR cooler too. My mechanic mentioned these often get clogged around the same time. I was lucky mine was still okay, but it's worth checking while they're in there. The best part? Haven't had a single issue since the fix, and it's been about 15000 KM. Money well spent, if you ask me! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! This really helps, especially knowing about the potential intake manifold carbon build-up and EGR cooler check. It's super reassuring to hear your car's been running smoothly for 15000 KM after the fix. I've just booked my HRV in for next week. I'll definitely mention about checking both the intake manifold and EGR cooler while they're at it. The symptoms are exactly like what you described, especially that awful shaking during cold starts! Really hoping it'll run as smoothly as your CR-V after the repair. Will update the thread once I get it sorted. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's been super helpful!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2014 Honda CR-V diesel last year, and I've got some experience working on cars (though I'm not a pro). Those symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced! My car was doing the same thing, rough idle, power loss, and that annoying check engine light. You're right to suspect the EGR valve. I took mine to my trusted mechanic, and sure enough, the EGR valve was stuck and needed replacement. The whole thing, including parts and labor, cost me around 355. After the fix, it was like having a new car, all the issues disappeared completely. Before I share more specific details about my repair experience, could you tell me your car's mileage and if you've had any previous EGR-related issues? Also, have you noticed if these symptoms are worse when the engine is cold or warm? Keep us posted!
